The Native American Law Section concluded successful negotiations with the State of Oklahoma

The Native American Law Section concluded successful negotiations with the State of Oklahoma regarding Tobacco Tax Compacts with Tribal clients resulting in a favorable agreement for both the Tribes and the State on October 1, 2003, prior to the midnight deadline. A ceremonial signing of the new compact is pending scheduling by Governor Henry's office.

The State and Tribes have been in lengthy negotiations for nine months resulting from the notice of termination served upon the Tribes by former Governor, Frank Keating. The State Director of Finance, Scott Meacham, Special Counsel to the Governor, Prof. Lindsey Robertson and Deputy General Counsel, Stephen Cortes, represented the State in the negotiations.

The Tribes and the State look forward to subsequent negotiations for a separate Gaming Compact. For more information about Tribal representation, please contact Jennifer H McBee.
